The Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi offers a rich and varied schedule of exhibitions of international scope and quality, cultural events, contemporary art installations, conferences, concerts and shows.

In the setting of one of the masterpieces of Florentine Renaissance architecture, the Piano Nobile holds two major exhibitions every year devoted to important themes and artists from the Renaissance to the modern era, while the Centre for Contemporary Culture Strozzina (CCCS) hosts theme-based exhibition projects designed to explore different aspects of contemporary culture.

The programmes and collateral events accompanying every exhibition ensure that Palazzo Strozzi is an exciting experience for all its visitors, especially for families and children to whom we devote special attention with tailormade captions, informative videos in the courtyard, educational workshops and specially designed visits, with areas set aside to allow you to take time out. 

Palazzo Strozzi is open all year round with a permanent exhibition on the history of the Palazzo and the Strozzi family, an elegant café, the Mandragora Agora|z art store and benches for you to rest your weary feet in its breathtaking Renaissance courtyard.

The Centre for Contemporary Culture Strozzina is the home of contemporary culture in the heart of Florence. Its almost 1,000 square metres of floor space in the historic cellars of Palazzo Strozzi are a thriving centre for the production and display of the very latest in Italian and international contemporary art trends, with a programme of exhibitions and activities exploring themes and issues in the contemporary world on a unique interdisciplinary basis.

Since it opened, the CCC Strozzina has hosted works by artists of the calibre of Richter, Hirst, Bacon, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Demand and Nan Goldin.

These masterpieces are regularly shown alongside work by younger or less well-known artists as part of our commitment to fostering dialogue among new takes on the various issues we address. 

Our decision to show contemporary art in an architectural setting such as Palazzo Strozzi is also a challenge and a stimulus designed to promote dialogue between past, present and future, while encouraging interaction on the part of visitors by offering them cycles of conferences held by experts in different disciplines, encounters with the artists and a wide-ranging educational programme for both schools and adults.

Palazzo Strozzi in Florence will be holding an exhibition entitled Divine Beauty from Van Gogh to Chagall and Fontana from 24 September 2015 to 24 January 2016. This outstanding show, with over one hundred works by well-known Italian and international artists, sets out to explore the relationship between art and religion from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. 

The exhibition will be hosting work by such major Italian artists as Domenico Morelli, Gaetano Previati, Felice Casorati, Gino Severini, Renato Guttuso, Lucio Fontana and Emilio Vedova, together with works by such international masters as Vincent van Gogh, Jean-François Millet, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Stanley Spencer, Georges Rouault and Henri Matisse.

From Morelli’s Realist painting to Vedova’s Informal Art and from Previati’s Divisionism to Redon’s Symbolism and Munch’s Expressionism, or to the experimental approach proper to Futurism, the exhibition analyses and sets in context a century of modern religious art, highlighting different takes on modernity, trends and occasionally even clashes in the relationship between art and religious sentiment.

The show’s star exhibits will include such celebrated works as Jean-François Millet’s Angelus, on exceptional loan from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, Vincent van Gogh’s Pietà from the Vatican Museums, Renato Guttuso’s Crucifixion from the collections of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome and Marc Chagall’s White Crucifixion from the Art Institute of Chicago. With sections devoted to the crucial themes in the religious and artistic debate, Divine Beauty will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to compare extremely famous works of art observed in a new and different light, alongside pieces by artists whose work is perhaps less well-known today but who, in their own way, have helped to forge the rich and complex panorama of modern art; and this, not only in a religious environment.

The exhibition, which is the product of a joint venture between the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, the former Soprintendenza Speciale per il Patrimonio Storico, Artistico ed Etnoantropologico e per il Polo Museale della città di Firenze, the Archdiocese of Florence and the Vatican Museums, is part of a programme of events devised to run concurrently with the Fifth National Bishops Conference, which is being held in Florence from 9 to 13 November in the presence of Pope Francis in person..

The exhibition is devoted to the work of Pontormo and of Rosso Fiorentino, the two painters who were the most original and unconventional adepts of the new way of interpreting art in that season of the Italian Cinquecento which Giorgio Vasari called the ‘modern manner’.

Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino trained under Andrea del Sarto while maintaining a strongly independent approach and enormous freedom of expression.
Pontormo, always a favourite with the Medici, was a painter open to stylistic variety and to a renewal of the traditional approach to composition.

Rosso Fiorentino, on the other hand, was more tightly bound to tradition, yet at the same time he was fully capable of flights of originality and innovation, influenced also by Cabalistic literature and esoteric works.

A unique and unrepeatable event bringing together for the very first time a selection of masterpieces by the two artists in Italian and foreign collections, many of them specially restored for the occasion.

Using 45 outstanding examples of large-scale bronze sculptures, the exhibition sets out to explore the development of art in the Hellenistic age as it spread from Greece throughout the Mediterranean between the 4th and 1st centuries BC.

The use of bronze, with its unique characteristics, allowed artists to impart an unprecedented level of dynamism to their full-figure statues and of naturalism to their portraits, where psychological expression became a hallmark of the style.

Thanks to the valuable cooperation of the J. Paul Getty Museum and of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the exhibition will be hosting pieces from many of the world's leading archaeological museums. 

The monumental statues of gods and goddesses, athletes and warriors, will be on display alongside portraits of poweful public figures, together with a number of works in marble or stone selected for the fascinating way in which they successfully emulate bronze.

In the minds of all Picasso appears as the major reference for modern Western art. 

Picasso and Spanish Modernity will be showing some ninety works by Picasso and other artists, ranging from painting to sculpture, drawing, engraving and even film, thanks to the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi’s synergistic cooperation with the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. The works of art on display will include such celebrated masterpieces as Woman’s Head (1910), Portrait of Dora Maar (1939) and The Painter and the Model (1963) by Picasso, Siurana, the Path (1917) and Figure and Bird in the Night (1945) by Miró and Dalí’s Arlequin (1927), along with Picasso’s drawings, engravings and preparatory paintings for his huge masterpiece Guernica (1937), none of which have been displayed outside Spain in such vast numbers before now.

The exhibition will present a broad selection of works by this great master of modern art in an effort to stimulate a reflection on his influence and interaction with such leading Spanish artists as Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Juan Gris, Maria Blanchard and Julio González: art reflecting on art and on the relationship between the real and the surreal, the artist’s heartfelt involvement in the tragedy of unfolding history, the emergence of the monster with a human face, and the metaphor of erotic desire as a primary source of inspiration for the artist’s creativity and world vision.

Photographs, videos and installations from eleven international contemporary artists suggest different ways of experiencing and portraying the family, prompting a reflection on images and dynamics that affect the life of every individual, their relations with others, their past and their present.

The exhibition reflects on two main aspects of the theme, analysing the dynamics typical of a family on the one hand and probing the image of the family and of what lies behind it on the other. Exploring the family means addressing a theme of which every living individual has his or her own personal and unique experience made up of relationships and bonds, closeness and separation. The family is a controversial and much-debated theme that is at once very private and intimate, while at the same time forming the very cornerstone of social life.
