Rohingyas


Rohingyas are an ethnic Muslim group in the majority Buddhist country of Myanmar and make up around one million of the total 50 million population. They hail from the country's northwest and speak a Bengali

The Rohingya violence was a result of the agitation among the villagers in the Rakhine village. This agitation was started when the Myanmar government and troops started killing the people of Rohingya as they were Muslims.
The houses of the villagers were torched, women and children were tortured, and many villagers were killed.

Some fought back, while some fled the country through the sea. Those who were left behind were forced to live in displacement camps.

Few who had fled the country came to India. With the help of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) they were given ID cards and a place to stay in Chennai.

They are given a small shelter in kelambakkam. Though the conditions they are living in is not up to the mark, they are satisfied. They say that they would prefer staying in small shelters like this rather than getting murdered in their own land.
