EM SPECTRUM

The electromagnetic spectrum is a term describing the range of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation.

The electromagnetic spectrum of a specific object refers to the characteristic distribution of electromagnetic radiation given off or absorbed by that object.

RADIOWAVES

disclaimer: the radio- and microwaves overlap on the spectrum. therefore the cell phone also utilizes radiowaves for operation, making radiowaves IMPORTANT!

INFRARED WAVES

the IR waves

IR waves are:
-emitted or absorbed by molecules when they change their rotational-vibrational movements
-generally invisible to the human eye
IR at wavelengths up to 1050 nanometers from specially pulsed lasers can be seen by humans under certain conditions
-used in heat-sensitive thermal imaging cameras (used to study human and animal body heat patterns)
-used as night-vision cameras

infraRED

We are immersed in infrared radiation everyday (nothing more than heat).
It is used in remotes, lasers, heaters, night vision goggles, thermal imaging cameras, thermometers.
IR can do lots of damage. For example, it raises the internal temperature of the eye, virtually “baking” it. Extended IR exposure can cause cataracts, corneal ulcers, and retinal burns.
IR in the sunlight damages skin.
