the commonwealth today
2019: COMMONWEALTH IS IN ITS 70s !
«If the goodwill for which the Commonwealth is renowned can appear intangible, its impact is very real. We experience it when people from all backgrounds continue to find new ways of expressing, through action, the value of belonging to a cohesive Commonwealth ".
With these words, HM Queen Elizabeth II, greeted the 70 years of the formation of the Commonwealth, a group of 53 nations, most of which were part of the British Empire, gathered together since 1949 to promote democracy, human rights, free trade and the rule of law.
Together with the Royal Family and surrounded by 2,000 people from all over the world, she attended Commonwealth Day in Westminster Abbey.
Lewis Pugh says: «The Commonwealth is much more than the sum of its people . We are also home to some of the most incredible species on earth. The Commonwealth is the home of the polar bear, African penguin, humpback whale, bluefin tuna and the Great Barrier Reef. Our common wealth is our ocean. I have seen the oceans completely change during my 32 years of swimming. We are at a crucial moment in the history of our planet and we must work together and without reservation to protect our oceans ... that this is the gift of the Commonwealth for the world! ».
