Jill Barthorpe was born in 1961 and studied at the Slade School of Art, winning a European scholarship to paint in South West France. “For me the excitement of painting is trying to capture the ‘likeness’ of things without slavish description. Paradoxically, I find the most interesting way to carve out this reality is to use objects of an ephemeral nature: trees, clouds, flowers; their constant movement and the passage of the light during the day forces me to make decisions about their essential character and to attempt to draw that, rather than rely on an impression based on the moment. Similarly, my approach to colour is to distil the essence and define the point of change rather than model the surface.”

Charles Jamieson was born in 1952 and studied sculpture at the Glasgow School and then at Fort Worth, Texas where he was awarded a Master of Fine Arts. Travelling widely in Europe Charles absorbed the European movement and this, combined with his roots in Scottish painting, has allowed Charles to develop his particular emphasis on colour and form. Charles's subjects encompass landscape, cityscapes and still life in his distinctive style of paring back the subject. Charles says of his work “Painting the heat and light is hugely important to me……Strong colours are so satisfying to work with. I don’t do angst. I’m really a happy, positive person.”
Charles is a past President of the Paisley Art Institute.

Born in 1960, Fiona Millais graduated from the University of Newcastle with a degree in Fine Art. Fiona’s paintings use the landscape or still life as a starting point for the composition but they are rarely a direct representation of the primary subject. Fiona is intrigued by how landscapes are shaped by ourselves and our ancestors, leaving traces, marks, and echoes. Often produced on the completion of a journey – either abroad or within the British Isles – Fiona’s pictures evolve in her studio from memories, drawings and notes. From these travels and walks in the countryside Fiona will collect objects such as stones, leaves and feathers which, when painted, create layers of texture, colour and interwoven history.
