I very much look forward to meeting both old clients and new at the Opening Reception on August 16. Although my association with Chris and staff at Q&Co goes back some fifteen years, I'm rarely on Nantucket and so this is also a chance for me to thank you for all your support over the years.
These 36 paintings represent about seventeen months' work. They have been especially enjoyable for me because I have used this opportunity to explore lots of ideas that have been percolating in my brain.
I've been able to tackle subjects from Marrakech to Paris and to allow my imagination free rein.
In many of the paintings there is an implied narrative. I invite you to find your own 'story' within them. I certainly have had fun, as I've painted them, listening to friends and studio visitors telling me what they imagine is going on in the paintings. I very much like the ambiguity of this and there are no wrong answers.
Two particular paintings, "My Childhood Bedroom" and "Waiting for Monsters", followed on from an assignment I gave my students in which I asked them to paint their rooms as kids and to paint an incident from their childhood. These two are the paintings I made for them: my bedroom in Darien, CT, age about 10, and me, age about 4, watching from our kitchen door in Rye, NY, ready to sound the alarm about monsters.
I very much hope you enjoy these paintings. They have given me much pleasure in their creation.
Best,
Donald
