"This exhibition is about Venice and Dorset. After more than forty years living and painting in West Dorset, its landscape and light, and its ancient bones move me more than ever. The coast and the great hillforts of Eggardon, Abbotsbury and Coney's Castle keep drawing me back to look, to walk and to paint. Throughout all of this time I have been painting in Venice whenever I've had an opportunity. This year came an invitation to spend some time in the city, with a Palazzo on the Grand Canal as a temporary home. Dazzled by the light when painting the dawn sunrise over S. Giorgio Maggiore I remembered very early mornings back in June painting the sun rising above a Dorset harbour.
The frames for my paintings are all hand-made in my own workshop, using methods and materials, gesso, gold and colour, that would have been familiar to Venetian painters since the early renaissance."
