On 26 June 2014, Amma Pharmacies started with 10 outlets. By the time May 2015 arrived, there were 100 Amma Pharmacies in various parts of Tamil Nadu.

During the launch, Jayalalithaa aka Amma addressed her party workers through through a video conference.

These pharmacies sell medicine at a subsidised cost - 15 percent according to Deccan Chronicle, 10-15 percent according to Hindu Businessline, and 20 to 35 percent according to Tuticorin Collector M Ravikumar (The Hindu). Various editorial content have various things to say about the quality of the medicine.

The Tamil Nadu government transport corporations like bus and train service providers were ordered to provide "hygienic and sterile drinking water at affordable price for the well being of poor and working class people of the state."

The first plant was set up in Poondi, in Tiruvallur district - a place where farmers long for water to sustain one batch of crops. Amma Water was launched on 15 September 2013.

"Ramanujam Sridhar, CEO of Bangalore-based brand communications consultancy brand-comm, says if the canteens and other welfare schemes are run efficiently and the prices are sustained, private enterprise should be worried. There are reports of some restaurant chains having dropped prices," read a report in The Hindu.
