Bernardo Bernardi

During the high-quality period of the 1950s and 1960s, Croatian architects affirmed the design of clients’ living spaces as an important part of their architectural processes.

The tendency towards total design is visible especially in the work of Bernardo Bernardi, in terms of the design of furniture for specific projects, as well as in terms of integration of the works of the then most exceptional artists.

By designing the whole range of furniture for his projects, Bernardi gave a specific identity to the Moša Pijade Workers’ University (Nikšić, Kučan, 1961). The same can be said for the Mistral Hotel in Brela (De Luca, Salaj, Rožić, 1965) where Bernardi designed living spaces that followed the then contemporary tendencies in both concept and quality.

His furniture design is comparable in quality and attitude to the Scandinavian examples of that time, and it has not lost that specific character and actuality to the present day.
